Prepare Ingredients and Tools
First, gather all your ingredients and tools. Wash your hands thoroughly. Place the chopping board on a stable surface and keep your knife ready. Have your measuring cups and spoons within reach. Get your steamer ready by adding 2 cups of water to its base.
- 02
Chop Vegetables
Take 1 medium onion (about 100g) and carefully chop it into very small pieces, roughly the size of a mustard seed x 5. Next, take 1 medium tomato (about 120g), cut it in half, scoop out the seeds with a spoon, and then chop the tomato flesh into small pieces, similar to the onion. Take half a medium cucumber (about 75g), peel it if desired, and chop it into small pieces.
- 03
Chop Coriander and Juice Lemon
Wash 2 tablespoons of fresh coriander leaves under running water. Place them on the chopping board and finely chop them. Take 1 medium lemon, cut it in half, and use a lemon squeezer to extract all the juice into a small bowl. Make sure no seeds fall into the juice.
- 04
Steam Sprouts
Place 1.5 cups (about 200g) of sprouts into the steamer basket. Ensure the water in the steamer base is boiling over medium-high flame. Place the basket with sprouts into the steamer, cover it with a lid, and let it steam for exactly 4 minutes. The sprouts should become slightly tender but still have a bite.
- 05
Cool Sprouts
After 4 minutes, carefully remove the steamer basket from the heat using oven mitts or a kitchen towel. Transfer the steamed sprouts into a large mixing bowl. Let them cool down completely for about 5-7 minutes. You can gently spread them out in the bowl to help them cool faster.
- 06
Combine Ingredients
Once the sprouts are cool, add all the chopped vegetables – the finely chopped onion, tomato, and cucumber – into the mixing bowl with the sprouts. Add the finely chopped coriander leaves as well. Ensure everything is in the same bowl.
- 07
Add Spices and Lemon Juice
Sprinkle 1.5 teaspoons of chaat masala evenly over the ingredients in the bowl. Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Pour in all the freshly squeezed lemon juice from the small bowl. These are the main flavorings for your chaat.
- 08
Toss and Serve
Using two spoons, gently toss all the ingredients together in the mixing bowl. Mix well until the spices and lemon juice are evenly distributed and coat all the sprouts and vegetables. Taste a small bit to check the seasoning; if needed, you can add a tiny pinch more salt or chaat masala. Serve immediately in individual bowls.
